My day job is in the newspaper industry and watching its demise is sad and scary. I like my job and love my paycheck. But you make great points about the future of online news. No one knows exactly how this all will shake out, but your prediction is closer to what I think may come down than anything I have seen so far.
I have been telling people that even though I face some serious questions as far as my job's future, this is a really exciting time to be doing what I am doing. Being involved during a transitional phase of something like this can get your heart pumping if you can force your mind to forget that you could quickly windup on the streets with your wife and all of your possessions at your feet.
